Meeting Your Needs

AREAS OF SERVICE

All children learn at different paces and have unique learning needs, many of which may not be met in a traditional classroom. When parents begin to notice changes in their child's grades and gaps in their learning, families may turn to tutoring services for their children. In order to address enrichment and academic gaps, I provide different interventions tailored to individual student needs.

Below is a preview of the different subject areas and interventions I can address through private tutoring in grades Prek-9:

Teacher and Student

ELA/READING TUTORING

Reading struggles have a wide impact — from serious stress at homework time, to lower self-esteem and participation in class. With my guidance and expertise, I will work with you and your child to fill in any academic gaps. Alternatively, I can also work with your child to enrich and challenge their academics if they are performing above grade-level.

I have a multitude of interventions I use to address areas of concern in:

-Fluency

-Reading Comprehension

-Phonemic Awareness

-Vocabulary

I partner these interventions with the Common Core State Standards and grade-level curriculum to ensure your child is receiving targeted support in areas of weakness. I also individualize instruction and interventions to appeal to student interest.

I assist in teaching your child how to understand math in an individual setting – my multi-faceted approach enables me to effectively explain math concepts and lend a helping hand to every student. I pride myself in fostering a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn!

I can also assist your child to overcome homework frustration. I help kids understand the homework assignment so they feel better prepared to complete the work at home.

Some areas of mathematics I address include:

-Addition & subtraction

-Fractions & decimals

-Measurement

-Problem solving

-Area, perimeter & volume

-Basic geometry

-Basic algebra

-Time & money

-Graphing

-Multiplication & division

WRITING TUTORING

Writing can be a very frustrating area for students of all ages. I aim to keep writing fun and interesting, while also providing personal writing instruction and interventions. For intense writing intervention, I utilize the Lucy Calkins and 6 +1 Writing Traits Curricula to assist in developing good writing skills.

Some of the areas of writing I help to address are:

- Conventions (such as spelling, grammar and parts of speech)

- Good sentence and paragraph structure

- Organization in writing

- Application of composition techniques to writing assignments

TEST PREPARATION/HOMEWORK HELP/STUDY SKILLS

Whether it be high-stakes testing such as state testing or NWEA MAP, or a classroom-based curriculum assessment, I can help your child prepare. In addition, I can help your child develop and hone their study skills habits, helping to form good study skills that they can utilize for the rest of their life.

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL LEARNING & SOCIAL SKILLS TUTORING

Supporting social interaction is an important piece of a student’s educational plan, as increasing social interaction and competency are vital to overall progress. The desire to make friends can often feel like a desperate attempt and the processes that allow social interaction to occur can be so overwhelming that often children do not know where to begin. I help students utilize their specific interests and apply it to social interaction. In order to build long lasting friendships, timing and attention, sensory integration, and communication are all factors that are addressed during our time together.
Social development encompasses a range of skills that can be built and layered to improve social competence (and competence breeds further interest) and interaction.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTION SUPPORT

Executive function refers to the mental processes and skills we use to manage the tasks of daily life in school, in the workplace, and in our home life. These skills include: staying organized, planning and prioritizing, focusing and following directions, starting and finishing tasks, managing our time, and regulating our emotions and impulses in order to achieve all of the above. Not all students are born with the natural ability to have strong executive functioning skills, and often times these skills need to be modeled and taught. I don’t believe in teaching executive functioning skills in isolation; rather, I teach a new skill and then work with your student to practice it right away with their current work so that they see the application and importance right away!

Executive Functioning tutoring can address the following needs:

          - Time Management: Students with executive functioning challenges may struggle with figuring out how long

things will take and how to break up their study time efficiently.

          - Organization: Executive functioning tutoring addresses organizational challenges applying to all aspects of

school: physical organization (backpacks and binders) and conceptual organization (outlines and class portals).

          - Prioritization: We all have to learn to “juggle” priorities. Your child has multiple classes with assignments due.

Executive functioning tutoring can help them come up with systems and processes to figure out what to focus

             on and when.

          - Work Completion: I hear from parents all of the time that their student mastered the test material but is

struggling due to missing assignments. Executive functioning tutoring helps students to complete AND turn in

             work.

          - Long-term Planning: Executive functioning tutoring helps teach your child to break up large tasks into small,

manageable subgoals. Having an achievable next step helps students to ditch procrastination.

          - Subject-specific coaching: Executive functioning skills are important across subject areas like in teaching a

student to plan and organize writing assignments and to select the right process for a math word problem.
